Your AI is only as trustworthy as the data behind it
What goes in determines what comes out. If you can’t trace the provenance of your training data or audit every output, you can’t explain, defend or improve your AI. Mapador produces the verified, traceable data your models depend on but cannot generate themselves.
Every AI decision rests on a chain of data
Good lineage creates a traceable chain from the original source to the decision a model informs. Every link in that chain needs to be visible and accountable.

What good lineage gives you
- The information the model learns from is traceable and verified
- Model conclusions can be explained and defended
- Problems can be found and fixed at their source
Without it
- The model may be learning from information nobody can vouch for
- Outputs can’t be explained, proved or defended
- When something goes wrong, finding the cause can take days
Verified inputs
- Training data traced to authoritative sources
- All transformations documented and reproducible
- Bias and errors identifiable before they reach the model
Traceable outputs
- Every model output linked back to the data that drove it
- Unexpected behaviour can be interrogated at source
The cost of poor lineage
- Unverifiable inputs mean unverifiable conclusions
- Errors and bias stay invisible until they surface in outputs
- No evidence trail for regulators, auditors or stakeholders
Lineage isn’t a technical detail. It’s the evidence trail that makes AI auditable, explainable and safe to act on.
Can AI replace lineage discovery, or only augment it?
AI-inferred lineage is probabilistic. Regulators, through frameworks such as BCBS 239 and SR 11-7, require deterministic, reproducible evidence, so AI can’t yet serve as the system of record.
A new model to govern
When AI generates the lineage, the inference itself becomes a model that needs validating. You end up needing governance for your governance tool.
An independent check
The better use of AI is as an independent verification layer alongside deterministic lineage built from parsed metadata, ETL definitions and catalogue scans.
Three ways AI strengthens deterministic lineage
AI can only help if a traceable, deterministic foundation exists underneath.
Reconciliation
AI independently re-derives lineage from the same source artifacts. Agreement increases confidence in the documented flows. Disagreement points to either a scanner limitation or an AI inference error, and both warrant investigation.
Coverage auditing
AI identifies candidate lineage that deterministic scanners may miss, such as dynamic SQL, embedded scripts or undocumented execution paths. Nothing is added to the authoritative record until it has been verified through deterministic analysis or human review.
Drift detection
Periodic AI re-inference detects where documented lineage and the current implementation have diverged. AI raises the signal; deterministic methods and human review confirm whether a genuine change has occurred.
This follows a control pattern regulators already recognize and accept: independent verification through reconciliation. The value of the second method lies precisely in having different failure modes from the primary, deterministic one.
A human-in-the-loop control stays explicit for any lineage promoted to the authoritative record. An AI assistant doesn’t replace the lineage foundation; it audits it. That only works if a traceable, deterministic foundation exists underneath, so the AI feature becomes an argument for the core platform, not a substitute for it.
“AI-assisted lineage assurance is a defensible governance model. AI-generated lineage is not.”
We build the data, not another model
We focus on producing quality, verified, trusted data for export to your AI models, rather than building our own models or presentation and query tools.
Your models already exist
Your models and tools are already built or in development. What they’re often missing is data that’s clean, accurate and traceable. That’s precisely what we produce.
Good data feeds everything
Good data feeds every model and every tool. Bad data breaks them all.
Looks aren’t accuracy
The model doesn’t care how good the dashboard looks if the data behind it is wrong.
Solution-agnostic
Quality data for any AI model, platform or downstream use. Get the data right and every tool built on top of it benefits.
Complete production environments, parsed and categorized
Custom parsers break your source code into components and relationships. We emulate code to fill gaps and resolve every parameter to a real name, producing fully realized technical data flows at file and field level. Raw technical lineage is never enough on its own, so customizable processes turn it into something more useful, and exports are tailored for loading into your AI models or MDM system.
Planning lineage for AI
Proper planning is essential for the best model. These are the questions we work through with clients before lineage is loaded into an AI model or solution.
Summarized lineage
Standards are often easier to enforce on summarized lineage before it’s loaded into your AI model or solution.
Business rule descriptions
Clear, consistent descriptions of business rules are easier to apply before loading than after.
Full automation
End-to-end lineage can be fully automated, but not out of the box. Customizations are needed, and those customizations must themselves be automated.
Cross-application coordination
- How current is your metadata?
- How do you coordinate releases?
- How quickly can you refresh?
Black boxes
Are there black boxes on the lineage path, such as vendor platforms whose internals can’t be parsed? Lineage needs to capture what goes in and what comes out on both sides.
Lineage stitching
End-to-end lineage depends on joining fragments captured by different tools into one view.
Mapador isn’t selling another AI model.
We provide the trusted, deterministic data foundation that makes every AI model more reliable. Without traceable lineage, from the provenance of your training data to the auditability of every output, you cannot explain, defend or fix what your AI model produces.
